Don’t feel bad if you don’t get everything on your little one’s wish list this year (you are doing them a favour!)

 

Hello Everybody!  Miss E-J here!  Music Teacher, Singer, Mum of three and at this time of year, let’s be honest feeling a little out of control!

It’s the time of year when I know I join many other parents in wondering - what makes the perfect gift? 

I’ve been researching this online and reading so many stories, and it seems the perfect gift is never about THINGS - but the one that provides unforgettable memories with family, friends, or someone you love!

 

As a family, we have often fallen into the trap of "too many gifts", toys that fall out of favour after 6 months. Recently, we have been trying to give our children unique gifts that create  memorable moments,  namely experience gifts, as it’s an easy way to combat that feeling of excess. 

 

Last year I enjoyed a special moment with my youngest son. He is currently obsessed with all things Marvel. So, when I saw that the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was hosting one of its music and movie nights showing the movie Black Panther, I knew that it would be the perfect experience gift for him and it would also give me some quality time with him! We had a fun and special evening just, Mum, Dad and our youngest son sharing an experience together.

The original drummer from the Black Panther movie soundtrack was there. Right in front of us, playing his talking drum!  I wish you could see how my son’s eyes pop out of his head. The drumming was incredible. It totally brought the movie to life and was phenomenal with both speed, dexterity, and acoustic. The whole experience was mind-blowing! A moment we will remember forever!

So, don’t feel bad if you don’t get everything on your little one’s wish list. You are doing them a favour.

 

Studies have shown that:

  • Fewer toys lead to higher quality of play for kids. 
  • Giving an experience instead of a toy, actually boosts a kid's intelligence and happiness. 
  • When people receive an experience gift, they have a stronger emotional response. (And this response strengthens the bond between the giver and the recipient too!.)

So, as you consider the gifts that you give your friends and family this year – maybe choose an experience gift instead of another “thing”. Whether it is a trip to the zoo, an upcoming show or perhaps even music lessons!
