When your parents meet in the college choir, with one studying education and the other studying music, it’s fair to say becoming a music teacher was almost destiny.
Growing up, our home was filled with music. My dad would sit and play at the piano, my mom would harmonize to any song on the radio, and we often made up songs in the car or in any ordinary situation. Actually, my family is still very much this way anytime we are together. My sister and I still get such a kick out of it when our Mom uses her signature song to call the family cat to the living room, or my Dad walks in from mowing the lawn singing his own original song about the air conditioning!
It was not until adulthood that I realized my experience growing up in a music-making family was quite unique. In my mind, every parent sang through life and through the everyday tasks. When I discovered that, for some, singing in front of their own family can bring on a case of the nerves, it drove my passion to bring musical moments to families and encourage making music in the home.
It has been such a joy to now begin and hopefully pass on a legacy of music-making to my children, and even to see my 6ft 5in, Toronto sports-enthusiast husband embrace singing through life. Our home may not be perfectly tidy, and we may lose our cool with one another more often than we'd like, but music brings a lot of fun and positive shared experiences to our household.
